Testing Recycled Binders for Strength - a Naked Binder story
June 9, 2009
Written By: Naked Binder Admin

Often people wonder about buying Naked Binder.  The cost is a little more than the vinyl  - what is the payoff? It is a recycled binder, and a recyclable binder but is that enough?

Lets examine cost.  Lets say you buy a Project binder with a 2" D ring. For a vinyl binder you pay around $6-7 for a basic black binder.  This is a binder you are using for work, so you may want to upgrade to a nicer look - oops up to $10 - 15 for vinyl, much more for leather, fancy papers or custom. Cost is an issue so we are back to $6 each.

You take your new binder back to work.  6-8 people use it a day, everyday.  Three months later, you are back buying a new binder (OK, this happened I used to run a climbing gym in San Rafael, CA - Class 5, one of the Touchstone Climbing gyms in the Bay).

So now we step back and start again.  Instead of vinyl, you buy a Naked Binder.  You spent $10. Same use patterns, but a year later that binder is still working. Working well, looking good and in constant motion.  Now you have saved money - 4 binders x $6 = $24.  1 x $10 = $10.  You have $14 to buy burritos for the staff.

But it doesnt stop there, that binder will last for many years.  Lets say 3 years before someone who shall remain nameless uses it for discus practice. That is $72 in vinyl - un-recyclable, toxic and ugly vinyl.  And you have saved $62 per binder you use.

Good job, bonus time.

How do we know it lasts?  I tested them in a climbing gym - a brutal environment for anything not made of iron.  Then we had them tested by an independent lab - first they did a flex test. 50,000 times opening and closing and the binder looked new.  Next a tumble test. 3 hours dropping and bouncing - supposed to simulate 10 years of wear. Here is a photo:Recycled Binder - after 3 hour tumble test - Naked Binder

This is AFTER the test.  After 3 hours of bouncing, falling and tumbling. You can see the "damage" below.  Yup, that fabric looks a little bit worn (see close up). But, the corners are still straight, the binder is holding up fine.

Naked Binder isn't just a recycled product, it is a better product.  Save money and the environment by buying smarter.
