Recycled Binders: Little ways to make a huge difference
August 19, 2010 Written By: Ken Recycled eco friendly 3-ring binders are a useful tool in lessening dependence on fossil fuels and other natural resources. How?, you ask. Good question. It seems like such a small thing, and yet the impact is very large. Less resources to make.Recycling paper uses less energy, no virgin wood, less water and produces less air pollution than using virgin wood or virgin wood pulp. Our papers and board are not bleached, also lessoning toxins in the environment. Compared to vinyl, which is a petroleum product, the Naked Binder is a huge environmental win. Vinyl is exceedingly toxic to make, use and even recycled (assuming you were able to find a place to do that). Studies done on communities around vinyl plants, fines levied for emitting toxins (by the EPA and local governments) all point to the impact production of vinyl has on our health and environment. Long lasting.Naked Binders have been tested to 250,000 flexes without fail. We have parents calling and telling us this is the only binder that lasted the entire year of their teenager's use. 250,000 flexes is amazing, but surviving teenagers... wow, that is huge. If your binder lasts longer, you use less of them also saving resources and waste. Recyclable. Completely.Since our eco friendly binders are made with 100% recycled materials (we can't verify the rings are, but we are working on that), they are 100% recyclable. Simply pop the rings out with a screwdriver and recycle the rings in the metal recycling bin and the binder in paper. It all goes back to being new products and using less resources again. With 40 to 60 million binders being sold and thrown away each year in the US, this can save up to 50 million pounds of toxic waste a year. Healthly.Vinyl is toxic. Everyone knows it. While it is possible to deny it, it is also possible to claim the earth is flat and smoking is good for you. So...In deptermining what products to buy for your home office or kids, looking at the long term savings is key. In this case, a recycled binder can save you money, your health, the planet and, dare we day, help you look really good. While we are not saying it is possible to eliminate all vinyl at this point (it is used in a loooong list of products) we do feel that creating cheap, toxic binders from vinyl that fall apart quickly and generate about 40-50 million tons of toxic landfill a year is unnecessary and irresponsible.
