Custom Recycled 3-ring Binders - A How To Guide
June 21, 2010

What is the best way to customize your recycled 3-ring binder

Whether you are customizing binders for proposals, in office use, or for home and scrapbooking you want your binder to be unique, beautiful, professional and memorable while not destroying it's recyclablility.

We will keep adding to this page as new ideas (and photos) come into our hands.  Eventually, we hope to have a vast resource to help spur your creativity and push your custom binders to greater heights.

Customizing binders

Labels

The simplest way to add high quality graphics and printing to your 3-ring binder is using a label.  You can customize one binder or  500 quickly and cheaply.  The only limits are your imagination. These can print on either ink jet of laser printers.

Naked Binder offers an assortment of print-to-edge labels to make your life easier, but almost any label will work.  Wrap them onto the inside of a binder for extra messages when the binder is open.

Screen Printing

If you have access to equipment (or someone who does), Screening is a great way to cusomize a binder. All of our eco friendly binders can be screened on and have been by everyone from Haworth Furniture to UrbanPosture.

Transfers

This trick has been used in photography for years and I have used in in various projects in the past to get accurate images to work with on unprintable surfaces.  First, print the image/text you want on your binder on an ink jet printer with the image reversed (this is important).  Place the image face down on the binder where you want it. Take a damp sponge and wet the back of the paper evenly and rub over image a bit.  Remove paper.

To finish off my binder, I took a pen knife and scraped the text a little to rough it up.  The texture is kind of cool, though may be impracticable if you are using this for a long term and much used project. Think Gordon Matta-Clark.
