"Let’s face it, organization has never been your strong suit (and no, flipping through Real Simple at the doctor’s office doesn’t count). So when it’s time to actually buckle down and sort out those papers, we suggest turning to Naked Binder, an environmentally-conscious (no toxins in manufacturing, packaging, or shipping) provider of binders, paper folders, tabs, and labels."

The 5 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, AND…?

January 19, 2012 Written By: Ken

The Sierra Club is an ongoing source for knowledge in the preservation of our lands, greening out life and environmental issues of our day.

I wanted to link you to an article they have posted

The 5 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, AND…?

as it is an excellent road map for evaluating what you purchasing, why and how much to worry about each step on the path to greening your life and lowering your carbon footprint.

A few take aways:

Look for the greatest benefit - and that often comes from your largest purchases.

The big purchases can have a much larger impact on your carbon footprint.  A refrigerator uses more energy to run, make and transport than does a blender.  It runs constantly and generally is one of the biggest energy draws in your home. The choice to buy a super energy efficient 'fridge is going to make a much larger impact that, say, a pedal driven blender.  (while a great idea how often do you blend?).

While they added this as the 5th R, Redesign your life is a huge step.

Bottles are lighted (and cans are lighter), office supplies are sustainable (check out those awesome Naked Binders!), cars are getting better milage... You may not be able to design your way out of an environmental disaster, but you can make some headway.

Check out the article (the link again is here.  It is clear and covers a lot of ground.  Greening your life takes some commitment and a number of steps.  The Sierra Club is a great resource so don't forget to check them out and JOIN! your local branch to help even more!

Effective Steps to a Green Home and Office

January 16, 2012 Written By: Ken

Setting Goals to Green your home or office

At Naked Binder, we are constantly working to lower waste from our production, office, reduce energy consumption and re-use any waste we have. What we found not a long time ago was that if we did not have a clear goal – if we just had just a general idea of reducing waste– we couldn't really get ahead.

If you are the person in charge of transforming your home, company or industry to be more energy efficient, less wasteful and altogether greener you have a daunting task.  The first questions to ask are how is this quantified, how do you start, and what results you are trying to achieve are at least some of the base questions.

Pick the areas you want to change, establish a target goal and figure out a timeframe and steps to get there. Whether you are going zero waste, lowering energy consumption, reducing paper use or eliminating all PVCs there are steps to get there.

People respond to challenges

Setting targets gives overybody (including yourself) a challenge to beat.  Deciding to cut energy use by 10% in the next two months gives a concrete and realizable goal. This encourages good habits (a bit lower temperatures, turning out lights, unplugging appliances… to get formed and gives you a big win if you make it.

Set your goals carefuly and grow them.  If your overall goal is a 60% reduction in energy use and a 80% reduction in paper use that won't happen overnight.  Establish steps with benchmarks and celebrations.  You are retraining everyone whether in your home or office to act differently.  A bit of positive reinforcement goes a long way.

At Naked Binder coffee and dark chocolate are the great motivators.
